Dear Savio Alumni & Friends, It is a Salesian tradition to
God Bless You, Fr. John Nazzaro, SDB '72
St. Dominic Savio Preparatory High School 1958-1993
Savio Preparatory High School 1993-2007
Welcome Savio Alumni
Since the unfortunate closings of St. Dominic Savio Prep and Savio Prep High Schools, there is still a place where the Savio spirit & tradition is kept alive. Fr. John Nazzaro (class of ’72), Executive Director of the Salesian Boys & Girls Club has created the “Savio Room” in the Salesian Boys & Girls Club located in Savio Hall. The Savio Room welcomes Alumni to come and reflect on their special memories of being a student at Savio. Class pictures, yearbooks, winning trophies, portraits and memorabilia have a home here. There is a plaque memorializing the deceased classmates and a Tree of Life in the Club’s lobby. Fr. John is the Salesian presence and has kept the Savio tradition of honoring the deceased Alumni with a Mass each November. We welcome you to come and visit the Club and the Savio Room. For more information or to schedule a visit, please call the Development Office at 617-567-0863.
Note from an Alum
St. Dominic Savio High School was founded in 1958 by Fr. Joseph Caselli of the Salesian order of St. John Bosco. The first graduating class was in 1962, and the last class, when the school was known as Savio Prep, in 2007. I am very proud to be a graduate from the Class of 1977; the Salesians and lay teachers taught us many valuable lessons.
Among the distinguished alumni of Savio are Bob Travaglini (1970), who became president of the State Senate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and Fr. John Nazzaro (1972), executive director of the Salesian Boys and Girls Club of East Boston.
My personal experience has been the closeness of my class. That closeness started in our freshman year (1973-1974) when our freshman dean Bro. Mike Mendl, SDB, would open the gym on Friday nights and then take us to Papa Gino’s for pizza, but also stressed having our homework completed before we could go out. Fr. Mike is now our spiritual advisor and friend.
When the late Fr. Earl Bissonnette, SDB, was director of Savio, he described my class as having a “touch of class.” Since our graduation in 1977, we have been meeting once a month to talk about old times and share our friendship.
As an alumnus of this great school, I am proud to be a Savio Spartan. Please remember our alumni and teachers who are no longer with us but remain with us in Savio spirit. Please come visit the Savio Room at the Boys and Girls Club.
